SALT LAKE CITY — As busy women, wives and mothers, the daily challenge can be, as Anne Morrow Lindbergh shares in "Gift from the Sea", “how to still the soul in the midst of activities … how to feed the soul.”

1. De-clutter negative emotions.

Feelings such as anger, resentment, hurt, bitterness, judging, etc., are part of our emotional range. But they clog up our ability to be intuitive and look through a clear lens at people, situations and life.

Choose the most pressing negative emotion you feel right now. Go back to the root, if you can. Consider what would happen if you simply let it go. Write the emotion on a piece of paper and do a physical action to go with it: flush it down the toilet, tie it to a balloon and release it in the sky (the kind not harmful to birds), or throw it away.

Years ago when I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I was in the training center one morning when our group’s emotions ran high. The group leader stood, asked us to write one frustration on a piece of paper, and then had us throw the paper in the trash. It was a clear moment to mark letting go.

2. Open up to receive. Think about your life possibilities and abilities, your talents and expression of them. How can you be open to receive more opportunities to develop, stay true to or more fully share them?

Robin Roberts, a host of “Good Morning America,” shares in her book, "From the Heart: Seven Rules to Live By", that she had a prime opportunity to host "American Gladiators." Her original desire had been to be a sportscaster, but this job meant fabulous money.

However, Roberts focused on her original talents and goals, took a less-paying opportunity, and that led her to a better–suited job and career with deeper meaning.

If you stay open, life may fulfill your dreams and hopes in ways you hadn’t planned. Years ago, I had a picture of a cozy snowed-in cabin with a glowing light to remind me of my dream to write a book for three months in such a cabin.

At one point, a friend called and said, I’ve got a million-dollar cabin for you, for free, for three days. Do you want it? It wasn’t three months, or wintertime, but I choreographed kids and life and took that amazing opportunity and wrote the rough draft of what would be "Create a Powerful Life Plan: 3 Simple Steps to Your Ideal Life".

3. Practice mindful living. Try feeling your way through a day using your senses. Be aware of tastes, smells, sights, sounds and things to touch that are meaningful or enjoyable.

In the book "5 Good Minutes" author Jeffrey Brantley, M.D., shares: “Despite its richness, the ‘inner life’ — with its thoughts, feelings, and sensations—often goes unnoticed. Yet these same thoughts, feelings, and sensations drive and shape much of your experience, unconsciously, moment by moment.”

These moments are typically short but meaningful. The other day while standing outside, my husband and I heard the song of a robin signaling spring from the top of a barren winter tree. It was a lovely moment to listen and feel the anticipation of a new season.

Choose a way to get more centered and practice it today, knowing that even if it’s only for a moment, you are truly feeding your soul.
