SALT LAKE CITY — Some foster children in Utah enter the system when life with a biological parent becomes unsafe. That was the case with 15-year-old Zane.
One of Zane's first memories as a child was a frightening one.
"I was kind of sleeping. I remember voices. People came in and robbed the place. My mom was fighting with them," he said.
His mother lost custody of him in 2007. He's never met his father. For the past several years, Zane has moved from foster home to foster home.
"I hate moving place to place," he said. "I bet all the kids do that are in foster care. If you move place to place, you never get a family to stay with."
Even though he's been through more than most kids his age, Zane thrives in school and especially loves math and science.
At school, his peers call him "Stone". He said it's because he has a hard time smiling.
"It's because of my old life," he said. "I sometimes think about it a lot. I know I can't do anything so that kind of keeps me down."
However, Zane gets an outlet playing video games.
KSL took him him to enjoy an empty arcade with a hand full of tokens. As he clutched his reward tickets from the day, he admitted there's something he wants more than anything — a permanent family.
"A dad that has time to play with me and a mom who is a stay-at-home mom," Zane said.
