NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and chief assistant Troy Vincent were told by 11 former players today that the league must act immediately when someone is accused of domestic violence. Vincent said the former players unanimously said the league should take the accused players off the field and pay them while due process takes care of itself. Hall of Famer Mike Singletary was among the 11 ex-players at the 3 1/2-hour meeting to discuss ways to improve the league's personal conduct policy.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A college student told a 911 dispatcher that a man he later identified as Rob Bironas chased his friends and him, then tried to hit their pickup truck minutes before the former Titans kicker's fatal crash. Metro Nashville Police Department released copies of two 911 calls this afternoon, including one call made by Bironas' wife reporting him missing at 11:40 p.m. on Saturday. The second was from Belmont University student Connor Fraley while being chased by Bironas, who was driving a white SUV.
NEW YORK (AP) — Commissioner Bud Selig says he hopes Derek Jeter will join baseball's ownership ranks after retiring as a player. Selig spoke of Jeter while presenting the New York Yankees captain with the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award, saying the shortstop would be fabulous as an owner. Jeter says owning a team is the only job in the sport that interests him.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles say Chris Tillman will pitch their playoff opener next Thursday at Camden Yards. Tillman is 13-5 with a 3.26 ERA this season, one year after winning 16 games in his lone All-Star season. He's been outstanding over his last 20 starts, recording a 2.21 ERA without allowing more than three earned runs in any outing.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The New York Mets have decided to shut down National League Rookie of the Year candidate Jacob deGrom. Mets manager Terry Collins says the club didn't want to risk the possibility of injury to the shaggy-haired right-hander. DeGrom is 9-6 with a 2.63 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 140 1-3 innings over 22 starts this year.
