The Utes are sitting at 3-1, about right where most fans had penciled them in before the season began.

But here comes the gauntlet. Four out of the next six opponents are in the Top 25, including No. 12 UCLA, who visits Rice-Eccles Stadium Thursday night in a nationally televised showdown.

Crimson Corner 9-23: Utes beat Cougars; Wilson and Anderson clicking on offense

Posted Sep 23rd - 8:19pm by Mike Grant and Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — This week on the Crimson Corner, the guys break down Utah's 20-13 win over BYU, their fourth straight over the Cougars. Part of the Utes success is the offense, where quarterback Travis Wilson and wide receiver Dres Anderson have performed extremely well.

Wilson to Anderson proves the difference in what was yet another close rivalry game

Posted Sep 22nd - 1:23am by Robert Jackson

PROVO — The Utah vs. BYU rivalry has always been a hard fought battle that usually ends up going right down to the wire. It is only fitting that the 2013 edition fit that bill perfectly.

The Utah Utes (3-1) outlasted the BYU Cougars (1-2) 20-13 in a game that neither team seemed ready to take control of.

The play calling for the Utes was suspect at times, leading to seven three and outs by the Utes offense. In addition, the Utes were an abysmal 1-14 on third downs.

Cougars vs. Utes: 5 things each team has to do to win

Posted Sep 19th - 5:05pm by KSL.com

SALT LAKE CITY — Fans on both sides have been waiting for this to come since the wild ending witnessed in Rice-Eccles roughly one year ago — the BYU vs. Utah rivalry.

And, like most years, this game is too close to call. Will the Cougars get their first win in the rivalry since 2009? Or will the Utes win their fourth straight in the series?

To help you get the scoop on what each team needs to do to win, we brought in BYU insider Cleon Wall and Utah insider Robert Jackson.

Utes' deficiencies exposed against Oregon State

Posted Sep 16th - 10:51am by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utes showed fight. They never quit. The offense is good. Travis Wilson is for real. Bubba Poole can play, too. There were some positives in the game against Oregon State, but there were also some negatives.

It is quite possible that Utah fans are just spoiled after watching Kyle Whittingham's defenses. They have been stout, sometimes outright dominant.

How about this year? So far, it's suspect.

Slow start, lack of pass rush doom Utes in Pac-12 shootout

Posted Sep 15th - 12:48pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Historically, Utah hasn't fared so well in conference openers since joining the Pac-12. And the 2013 Oregon State Beavers weren't about to let that trend change.

Despite a desperate rally from the offense to force overtime, Utah fell to 0-3 in Pac-12 Conference openers as they lost to Oregon State 51-48 in a high octane shootout at Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday night.

To say the Utes overcame a lethargic start would be an understatement. Two minutes into the second quarter, Oregon State had more points (13) than Utah had yards (12). Utah was held without a first down for the entire first quarter. Nine plays, 12 yards, three punts.

5 things the Utes need to do to beat Oregon State

Posted Sep 12th - 4:26pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — The difficulty gets kicked up a couple of notches as the Utes turn their attention from a huge blowout win over Weber State to their first Pac-12 matchup of the season.

Utah (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) welcomes in Oregon State (1-1, 0-0 Pac-12) Saturday to Rice-Eccles Stadium in a late night showdown on national TV.

For the Utes, they face an Oregon State team that lost to Eastern Washington in week 1, but bounced back to beat Hawaii last week.

10 things to know about Utah vs. Oregon State

Posted Sep 9th - 3:16pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — As coaches always say, "The best part about being 2-0 is the chance to go 3-0."

For the Utes, being 2-0, their best start since 2010, doesn't mean much considering the real season gets underway this Saturday as they kick of Pac-12 play hosting Oregon State.

The Utes and Beavers, although in different divisions in the conference, have developed quite a rivalry over the past few seasons.

Crimson Corner 9-8: Utah 70, Weber State 7

Posted Sep 9th - 11:15am by Mike Grant and Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — On this edition of the Crimson Corner, the Utes beat Weber State, we break down Travis Wilson, and kicker Andy Phillips is an unlikely hero.

Utah's Travis Wilson among elite company

Posted Sep 8th - 8:58pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — From Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel to the elusive Chuckie Keeton at Utah State, college football is full of great quarterbacks.

Especially in the Pac-12. Four of the nation's top quarterbacks call the "Conference of Champions" home.

Some names on the list of top quarterbacks so far in 2013 you'll recognize — Arizona State's Taylor Kelly, Oregon's Marcus Mariota and UCLA's Brett Hundley. The fourth? Utah's Travis Wilson.

Utes offense rolls behind quarterback Travis Wilson

Posted Sep 7th - 3:11pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — On a warm, sunny afternoon in Salt Lake City, the temperature in Rice-Eccles was significantly hotter as the Utes offense exploded behind starting quarterback Travis Wilson.

Utah rushed out to a 49-0 lead at the half before cruising to a 70-7 win over Weber State.

There was no letdown for Wilson, who built on his solid performance last week to lead the offense with five touchdowns — three passing and two rushing. His final statistics? 14-19 for 264 yards and three touchdowns passing, three carries for 93 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

Utes' Andy Phillips: 'I am a skier but I am playing football today'

Posted Sep 5th - 1:12pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — Andy Phillips story has been well publicized by now. He is an alpine skier that is now a football player.

It is very reminiscent of Happy Gilmore who introduced himself while entering a golf tournament, "I'm a hockey player but I'm playing golf today."

Put yourself in Kyle Whittingham's shoes, or special teams coach Jay Hill's shoes for a moment. There are kids that come in all the time wanting to walk-on the football team. Imagine the coaches' faces when Andy Phillips comes in and basically says, "Hi, I am a skier but I am playing football today."
