Last month, the third extension to the Intermountain Saving Lives exhibit was installed at Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum in Salt Lake City. The new Intermountain Life Flight Rescue Hangar debuted with new interactive activities that highlight the work of paramedics in life-saving air operations.
Children now have the opportunity to experience being a rescue team member in several new ways.
Flight Simulator
Put on your Life Flight shirt and helmet and take a virtual Life Flight helicopter rescue flight. This is a chance to sit in a virtual cockpit and enjoy actual video footage of a Life Flight rescue narrated with commands from the command center.
Hoist Rescue
Intermountain Life Flight was the first and only civilian air ambulance to receive certification to perform hoist rescues. Kids can take the part of a hoist rescuer by securing a patient into a hoist basket and virtually flying the patient to safety at Primary Children’s Hospital. Video footage of the rescue flight is displayed on the floor to simulate a flight experience from the point of view of the rescuer.
Mechanics Shed
Assemble a helicopter engine puzzle to start the engine with lights, sound, and overhead propeller. Kids can also enjoy seeing a real helicopter engine on display.
Previous Exhibits
Intermountain Healthcare and the Museum have created a long-time partnership by providing hands-on exhibits for children and families to explore health careers in a playful environment. The Life Flight Hanger is the final addition to the other interactive experiences offered in the Saving Lives exhibit, which started in 2006 with the donation of an actual Life Flight helicopter and command center.
In 2013, the exhibit expanded with the addition of the Primary Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, featuring interactive areas for triage, imaging, dress up, charge nurse, and surgery. In 2015, a helicopter toddler playground was added. The Intermountain Saving Lives exhibits are located on the outdoor area of Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum, which features picnic tables, additional benches for seating, and sunshades to allow for a comfortable place for museum visitors to rest and enjoy a refreshment.
