Volunteering to serve

Ellen F.

“A woman in our area is a single mom of three kids. She has been having medical problems. Basically, she had to replace her hip, but in the process, got an infection that required her to have her hip removed until the infection went away. It has left her pretty immobile. She received help at first with meals every night, carpools helping with kids, babysitting, even her ex-husband moving back into the home to help out. This has been ongoing for months.

“Recently, she was given notice on her rental and needed to move. Her friends, family and neighbors and ward families (the one she's moving out of and the one she's moving into) are remodeling a rental nearby so that she and her kids can move into it and not leave the area where they are so loved. The volunteers have put hundreds of hours and dollars into the project with no thought of being reimbursed in any way. It is a simple remodel, nothing fancy, just filled with love and more love. It’s been amazing!”

Great sportsmanship

“During one of the distance events at Alpine Days Junior High competition, a girl stumbled and fell to the ground. The competing young lady ran past her about five to 10 steps and then stopped, turned around, verbally encouraged the girl and then finished the race side by side. It was a spectacular display of sportsmanship, and I noticed several spectators had tears in their eyes.”

Not judging others

“I was at a convenience gas station/store and a couple with a young girl about 4 years old (were) there buying some things. I couldn’t help but notice there were tattoos all over the father of the little girl and the mother had several nose rings in her nose. Sad to say, but I jumped to conclusions in my mind that these people were really hardcore and I felt sorry for the child. The little girl was really a beautiful child and I mentioned this to the girl’s mother who was in line ahead of me. She said a quick thanks. Then the father came up to the register and paid for their purchase. He turned to me and asked me if what I had in my hands was all that I was going to get. I said yes. Then he turned to the cashier and told her that he wanted to pay for mine too.

“I was so touched. It made not only my day but my week! I have told my family and friends that I was sorry that I had judged so harshly. They were good-hearted people, and I feel they will raise their daughter well. Their kindness makes me want to pay it forward to others.”
