SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah chiropractor was federally indicted Wednesday for allegedly trying to pay overdue taxes using a check linked to defunct bank accounts.

Louis DeLynn Hansen, 64, of Orem, is charged with one count of attempting to evade paying federal income tax and one count of corruptly endeavoring to impair and impede the due administration of internal revenue law.

If convicted, Hansen could face up to five years in federal prison for the first charge and up to a three-year sentence on the second charge. He could also face financial penalties.

The U.S. Department of Justice released a statement Wednesday saying Hansen is accused of issuing a bad check for nearly $343,000 in March 2012 to pay for taxes he owed from 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. The check was linked to a "closed bank account," the department said.

Hansen also issued four checks for $425,000 each in June 2012 "in an attempt to have funds credited to his IRS tax account," despite those checks being linked to a separate closed bank account, the agency contended. He allegedly owed about $240,000 in taxes at the time.

Hansen was indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City.

The Department of Justice says Hansen is a "chiropractor and health care products business owner." It isn't clear from Utah licensing databases where he conducts his practice or runs his business.

According to court records, Hansen has no significant prior criminal history in Utah.
