PROVO — Colorado golfer Zahkai Brown began the final day of the Utah Open three shots back of the lead.
He didn’t finish there, though.
Brown shot 16-under-par to win the Utah Open by two shots over runner up Ty Travis of Boise, Idaho.
The former Colorado State golfer had made trips to Riverside Country Club in Provo for four years during the Cougar Classic, and he played like he knew the course well Sunday.
And that wasn’t even the best part of his weekend.
“I’m feeling great,” Brown said. “I’ve got some money now, and I’m getting married in five days and going to Tahiti. It’s good.”
He grabbed a share of the lead on No. 16, then dropped a birdie on the par-3 17th hole before finishing No. 18 with a birdie to clinch the victory and the $21,000 purse.
Reigning Utah State Amateur champion Patrick Fishburn started the day with a two-shot lead, but the BYU junior triple-bogeyed the par-5, 15th hole to fall back.
Fishburn finished tied for fifth at 1-under, joining former BYU golfer Joe Parkinson.
“I’m a little disappointed I didn’t win. I had a good first round, but wish I had played better the last two,” said Fishburn, who shot a course-record 62 on Friday. “I’ve just got to learn from it and try to do a little better next time.”
