OAKMONT, Pa. — Daniel Summerhays’ final day at the PGA Tour’s second major started off well.
The Farmington native shot 1-under-par on the back nine to finish his third round, including an eagle on No. 17, to take a top-five berth into the final stanza at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
But things didn’t go as well in the final round.
Summerhays fired six bogeys in the third round — including his third-straight bogey on the first hole — to finish tied for eighth with a four-day total of 2-over-par 282 on Sunday at the U.S. Open. The win was the 16th top-10 finish in a PGA Tour event of his career and the first since he finished tied for fourth in the Valero Texas Open on March 29, 2015, and automatically qualifies him for next year's U.S. Open.
The former BYU golfer carded four-straight bogeys around the turn through No. 10 to finish 4-over on the front nine, then added an even-par effort performance on the back to take himself out of contention as winner Dustin Johnson surged ahead in the final round.
Summerhays got one shot back with a birdie on No. 12, and went even-par the rest of the way — adding a bogey on No. 16 and a birdie on No. 17 to close out his eighth-place finish that tied with Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson and Jason Day.
Summerhays tied for the low round of the tournament with the 65 he shot in the second round Friday. Runner-up Shane Lowry also shot 65 in the third round that bridged Saturday and Sunday.
Johnson fired two birdies to take a two-shot lead into the final nine holes of the tournament and rolled to a three-shot win over Jim Furyk, Scott Piercy and day-three leader Lowry, who finished tied for second at 1-under 279.
Johnson shot 1-under 69 with the penalty to finish with a four-day total of 4-under 276 for the first PGA Tour major win of his career. Sergio Garcia and Branden Grace tied for fifth with 280, and Kevin Na was seventh at 281, one stroke ahead of Summerhays.
