RIVERTON — Police asked people to avoid the area of 1750 W. 12600 South after a bank robbery Monday morning.

One person is in custody after the Wells Fargo bank at that location was robbed just after 9 a.m., according to the Unified Police Department. A suspicious package was left behind in the building, but investigators determined that it did not contain explosives at about 12 p.m.

During the robbery, a man with a gun allegedly opened a bag and showed a Wells Fargo employee a device that he claimed was a bomb. Someone inside the bank called police and provided "moment by moment information," according to Lt. Lex Bell of the Unified Police Department.

Police arrived on scene while the man was still in the bank. Douglas McEwan, 61, was taken into custody without incident when he exited the building, Bell said. Detectives recovered a gun.

Employees told police the man left the bag with electronics inside the bank.

"To me, this seemed like kind of like a strange bank robbery," Bell said. "It seemed like it was going in a bad direction. Happily, no one (has been) hurt so far."

Twelve businesses in Riverton Plaza have been evacuated as the investigation continues. The intersection of 12600 South and Redwood Road was also closed.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
