BLUFFDALE — Three Bluffdale homes were damaged after a canal overflowed Monday evening, according to fire officials.

The canal was breached in several spots along Gun Stock Drive near 15800 South after it was filled Monday, said Bluffdale Fire Chief John Roberts. The flooding occurred around 7:15 p.m.

The canal was being filled for the first time this spring. Workers thought it was "in good shape" and went home as of about 5 p.m., Roberts said. But a high amount of fall and winter debris later clogged the canal, causing the flooding, he said.

One of the homes sustained "a lot of heavy damage" and the others were moderately damaged, according to Roberts. All three homes' yards sustained extensive damage.

About 10 firefighters, with the help of Bluffdale public works employees, were diverting water out of the canal Monday night to keep the water level down. Water was also pumped from the affected homes.

Roberts predicted the effort would last past midnight. He didn't immediately provide a dollar estimate of the damage done, but said residents in one home had lost the use of their furnace and water heater.
