BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful Boulevard has a special meaning for three-time Olympian Henry Marsh.

Not only did Marsh, a BYU alum, live near the heights of Bountiful Ridge Golf Course. The nine-time U.S. champion steeplechase runner spent his days running up and down the Boulevard, getting ready for the Olympics.

“This place has a lot of special meaning,” Marsh said. “This is where it happened, where I did most of my training.”

Rated the No. 1 steeplechaser in the world in 1981, 1982 and 1985, Marsh’s journey as an Olympian was often circuitous — much like the path he ran every day for several years.

He was a five-time All-American in college, a 1988 BYU Hall of Fame inductee and a three-time American steeplechase record holder. As his athletic career winded down, he settled into a law practice in Salt Lake City, worked in television, and briefly hosted a sports program on KSL NewsRadio.

Marsh also served on the executive board of the United States Olympic Committee and Athletes’ Advisory Council, as well as a consultant to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

KSL Golf caught up with Marsh on the golf course next to his old stomping grounds.
