Childs, Bingham down Copper Hills; Layton's Kemp connects with backboard

WEST JORDAN — When playing the Bingham boy's basketball team, you have to know where post Yoeli Childs is at all times.

Childs grabbed 15 points and 13 rebounds to help Bingham boy's basketball defeat host Copper Hills, 66-59 to virtually clinch the league's top seed in the Class 5A state playoffs and at least a share of the region title.

Samuta Avea added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Miners (17-2, 9-0 Region 3), who took a three-game lead on the Grizzlies (16-3, 6-3 Region 3) with three games left in the regular season. Lleyton Parker added 14 points and five boards for Bingham, and teammate Schyler Shoemaker scored 10.

Copper Hills' Preston Sanchez led all scorers with 19 points, and Charlie Olsen added 15 points and five rebounds for the Grizzlies.

Layton 65, Viewmont 53 — At Viewmont, Utah football signee Julian Blackmon had 22 points, six rebounds and four assists as the Lancers held off the Vikings.

Jakoby Kemp added 14 points for Layton (10-8, 7-1 Region 2), but the scary moment came as Kemp hit his head on the backboard following a dunk.

Kemp returned to the game after the it, and also finished with 10 rebounds for the Lancers. Dallin Watts supplied 12 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Kasen Larson tied the game-high with 22 points for Viewmont (12-7, 6-3 Region 2).
