SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake County has agreed to pay a $280,000 penalty as part of an agreement with the federal government over alleged mismanagement of storm water runoff.
The U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release Tuesday that the resolution requires the county to come up with a plan to fix problems with the storm water management system.
The alleged Clean Water Act violations of were discovered in 2012 by the Environmental Protection Agency and state regulators during a review of storm drains, pipes, ditches and roads that are supposed to keep snow and rain runoff from picking up pollutants and washing into watersheds.
Salt Lake County officials said in a statement they've added staff, done more training and increased frequency of inspections to resolve the matter to the satisfaction of the state and federal regulators.
