WEST VALLEY — Police arrested a man and a juvenile Friday night after officers heard gun shots while responding to a separate incident, West Valley police reported.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, officers in a task force were in the area of 3800 West and 4400 South when they heard gun shots. A male contacted one officer who was checking the area, saying he had been shot at. Meantime, another police officer saw a blue Ford fleeing the area at high speeds and attempted to stop the vehicle, but was unsuccessful, West Valley police Lt. Julie Jorgensen said.

Police followed the car, the driver of which was suspected to be connected with the shooting, to Oxford Way — a residential area near 3770 South, Jorgensen said. Witnesses say the driver lost control of the car in some loose dirt left on the road from construction and stopped the vehicle. The two occupants then fled on foot.

Officers set up containment in the area, searching the neighborhood with a K9 officer. Police located the juvenile passenger of the vehicle and connected him to a home in the area, Jorgensen said. Officers forced entry into the home at 3691 S. Oxford Way and found the man under a staircase. The K9 engaged the suspect, biting him.

Police also recovered a firearm in the vehicle.

Joseph Guerrero was arrested on scene and cleared at the hospital after receiving a few stitches, Jorgensen said. Police said he was wanted for felony parole violations in connection with a previous armed robbery, and was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on additional charges.
