LOGAN — Charges will not be sought against a rancher who reportedly fired a shot into the ground to scare away juveniles from his campsite early Friday, police said.

Instead, an 18-year-old man and two juveniles who were in a confrontation with the rancher on his property were arrested, Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said.

On Friday afternoon, police exonerated a man whose home they surrounded with a multi-agency SWAT team Friday morning.

The rancher came home from attending to his cattle and surrendered to SWAT officers he found outside his home, Jensen said. Police earlier had surrounded the home, shot bean bags at it and used a megaphone to try to establish contact with the man they believed was inside.

Officers were there because Josh Haag, 18, and two juveniles told police the man fired a shot during an encounter with them around 4:30 a.m., Jensen said.

The teens told police they rolled their vehicle in Logan Canyon while rushing to get away from the rancher. They then walked the rest of way down the canyon to call police, Jensen said. The wrecked car was later discovered off the side of the road in the canyon.

After several hours of investigation, it was Haag and the juveniles who were facing legal repercussions following the incident. Haag was booked into the Cache County Jail on Friday for investigation of obstruction of justice, vehicle burglary and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, all misdemeanor offenses. Both juveniles will face similar charges, Jensen said.

The rancher told investigators he discovered the juveniles on his campsite property, yelled at them and fired one shot into the ground to scare them away. The juveniles left the area after he fired his gun, the man said. The Cache County Attorney's Office reviewed the incident Friday and elected not to pursue charges against the man.

A fourth juvenile is being sought by police as a person of interest in the case, Jensen said.

Police didn't say what information led investigators to suspect Haag and the juveniles of wrongdoing.
