AMERICAN FORK — Two women tried to transport several pounds of marijuana in wrapped Christmas packages Sunday, police said.
An officer conducted a traffic stop at about 10:30 p.m. after he noticed a vehicle speeding and swerving between lanes on Main Street, according to American Fork police Lt. Sam Liddiard. He said the vehicle was a rental car registered out of California.
While the officer was checking the driver’s information, Liddiard said a sheriff’s deputy stopped by with a K9 to sniff around the vehicle. The dog indicated drugs were in the vehicle, according to investigators.
“There were nine individually wrapped boxes. They were wrapped to give the appearance of Christmas presents,” he said. “One of those packages, the wrapping was torn open, as well as the box that was wrapped by that Christmas wrapping, and the officer could see into that box to see what he thought was marijuana.”
The presents were taken out of the vehicle and brought to the police department to be unwrapped, according to Liddiard. He said investigators found 3.69 pounds of marijuana. Police believe the package delivery is part of a larger, local operation.
The driver, 42-year-old Nicole Hagerman, and 47-year-old Sami Lynn McLuckie were arrested on suspicion of 2nd degree felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled substance, according to Liddiard. The two women, who are both from California, were booked into the Utah County Jail.
