PROVO — The BYU Cougars took on the Nevada Wolf Pack at LaVell Edwards Stadium and hoped to get the team back on track after losing star quarterback Taysom Hill for the season. While BYU’s newest starting quarterback Christian Stewart played his best game, costly mistakes cost the Cougars the game.

The game was exciting to watch, and at one point in the first half it looked like BYU was going to run away with it as running back Paul Lasike was running at will and Stewart was delivering passes on the money and moving the ball.

BYU rolled into halftime leading 28-13, but stalled drives and missed tackles gave all the momentum back to Nevada and its veteran quarterback Cody Fajardo.

Give Nevada credit for coming back, but BYU's defense simply can't make a play to get off the field. We've seen it all year. — Darnell Dickson (@DarnellWrites) October 19, 2014

Stewart had a breakout performance against the Wolf Pack, throwing for 408 yards and four touchdowns. He also added another 47 yards on the ground.

Stewart had an impressive night that should give him some great confidence heading into upcoming games, but two costly fumbles by the quarterback in the fourth quarter kept the Cougars just out of reach of the win.

#BYU C Stewart giveth 408 yrds, 4 TD's 0 INT's and he taketh 2 fumbles in 4th QTR. If defense is competent BYU wins the day. — Brian Child (@BYUSportsCave) October 19, 2014

Backup running back Nate Carter also stepped in for a banged-up Algie Brown, and the young runner racked up 87 yards and averaged over 12 yards per carry.

No BYU coach will blame this loss on injuries. This loss had nothing to do w/injuries. 3rd string Nate Carter was better than 1st strong NEV — Benjamin Criddle (@criddler21) October 19, 2014

BYU needs to shake off the loss and Stewart needs to forget the fumbles because they have a short week and then face Boise State in Boise on Friday night. ![](http://beacon.deseretconnect.com/beacon.gif?cid=217775&pid=4)
