When searching for digital marketing jobs in Utah on Indeed.com, over 300 results pop up. When searching KSL Jobs, almost 500 marketing jobs were posted just in the last 30 days.

What can that tell you about marketing jobs in Utah? It's safe to say that marketing jobs are booming and the uptick in jobs will continue as more businesses seek to advertise in online world.

Simpyhired.com says, “The rise in digital marketing has created an immense career opportunity. A vastly diverse, evolving, and promising path, digital marketing is drawing entrepreneurs, new grads, and even traditional businessmen and women looking for a career change.”

Here are five ways to dive into digital marketing and pursue it as a profession.

1. Dive in

Just jump in and learn. Hands-on experience will get you far in the digital marketing world. Simplyhired.com says, “Book smarts are important, but street smarts will really get you ahead in the industry. Digital marketing street smarts can be gained by reading trade publications or blogs, following specific hashtags on Twitter, attending local marketing meet-ups or webinars, finding a mentor within the industry and simply learning by doing.”

When you hear about a new online product, test it out and click around. Don't have a Twitter account? Try it out! Never promoted a post on Facebook to reach more people? Experiment! The best way to learn is to get your feet wet.

2. Specialize

Dabble with all areas of digital marketing, but specialize in something. Lisa Midgley, a Senior Consultant at OgilvyOne in New York City, gives advice to those seeking digital marketing careers.

“Find an area that interests you,” Midgley said, “then determine the tool/platform for that area and learn it. Become a power user for it. Learn about other tools/platforms that compete with it, and those that work alongside it.” Greater success will be found in the workplace if specialized.

Who was it that said, "Do not try to do everything; Do one thing well?" Oh yeah, Steve Jobs. He must have been on to something...

3. Network

Seek to connect with people wherever you are. After all, networking is all about making quality friendships. Use Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media sites to connect with people in the digital marketing industry.

Brandon Hassler of Market Campus, a nine week digital marketing bootcamp here in Utah, says that networking is a huge part of landing a job. “We are constantly networking with companies all over the state (Utah) to help with job placement once our students have graduated from the course.” What you know is extremely important, but who you know will get you in the door.

4. Be passionate

Digital marketing is exciting and changing. Midgley from OgivyOne says, “Digital marketing is exploding with possibility. There are so many new and evolving players in the landscape, from tools and platforms to agency partners and consultants, to ways (modes/devices) to speak to a consumer/client. There is so much by way of possibility and potential.”

5. Get professional training

The truth is, digital marketing has so many aspects to it and many people don’t know where to start or who to listen to.

As previously mentioned, there is great value to experimenting with paid ads, promoting posts, etc., but at some point it’s wise to get professional training. After all, it could save you a lot of headache and provide great value.

When you’re looking to learn fast and focus on specific material, an expensive, traditional degree isn’t always convenient or the answer. University courses often struggle to keep up with how fast the marketing industry grows.

A certificate-based program from a credible course, on the other hand, can give you the skills needed to launch a successful career in digital marketing for a fraction of the cost.
