WEST JORDAN — Educators and police are urging every child and every driver to be more cautious and not get lax with safety as the school year progresses.

The Jordan School District is getting ready to give demonstrations to thousands of students about how to be safe on and around school buses.

These safety demonstrations take on a new importance after 10-year-old Seleny Crosby was hit by a school bus in South Jordan in the spring. She died two days later from her injuries. The bus driver was charged in connection with her death.

“That was one of those unfortunate things. I hope the kids will take it a little more seriously,” said Charlene Arko, transportation coordinator for the district. “As a bus driver and especially a sub, you are hoping they do everything they are taught to do.”

Bus drivers will be holding assemblies for thousands of kids, walking them through how to cross safely with a 12-foot buffer zone, how to wait for the bus and how to sit safely on the bus.

“When you see one (kid) scatter, or when you pull away you see (a kid) cross behind you, your heart just sinks,” Arko said. “The next morning you can reinforce, what are the rules, I need you to cross in front to see where you are.

Educators will also teach kids to never walk behind a bus, even when it's stopped. If a child drops something, they should tell the bus driver, "and they can get it together," Arko said. "We never want the child under the bus or by the bus."
