SALT LAKE CITY — For the hundreds of children in the Utah foster care system, adoption can't come soon enough. This week's Wednesday's Child has been waiting for a permanent home for 12 years.
Tommy is a 14-year-old boy who loves all things outdoors, and his optimistic outlook on life is contagious. Wednesday, I got to know Tommy over a round of miniature golf, where he felt right at home.
"This is so cool huh?," he said. "I've never been somewhere like this."
Tommy first entered the foster care system when he was 2 years old. Since then, he's moved several times. Right now, he lives in a group home, but he's hoping that will change.
"I want to be able to go to a home where I can go out, go to the movies and make good friends," he said.
He likes to talk about the things he will be able to do with his adoptive parents, and two activities are at the top of his list.
"Fishing and hunting," he said with a big smile on his face. "I would like that."
Tommy said he feels like he's constantly in waiting mode for his forever family.
"Everyday I'm hoping someone will adopt me, but they never do," he said.
Still, he said he tries to stay positive and have hope for the future.
"I'm sure I'm going to find a great home," Tommy said.
