CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske is no stranger to the Nevada statehouse after spending 18 years as a Republican lawmaker.
But her recent promotion to the state's third-highest constitutional post means an upgrade to prime office space in the Capitol and a new platform for advancing her priorities.
Cegavske says she wants to work out the bugs in the state's business licensing system to make it easier for companies to set up shop in Nevada.
She also wants to see heightened security at the polls by requiring voters to show photo identification.
That proposal has drawn sharp criticism from people who say it would disenfranchise voters without ID cards. They say it would disproportionately affect minorities and the poor, who are more likely to vote for Democrats.
