SALT LAKE CITY — Mitt Romney will campaign in Utah next month for Mia Love, the Republican candidate for the 4th District congressional seat now held by retiring Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah.

Romney is scheduled to hold a fundraiser on Oct. 8 for Love followed by a rally at Thanksgiving Point. Although he made a commercial for Love in her close 2012 race against Matheson, Romney has not campaigned here for her before.

"We're excited," Love's campaign manager, Dave Hansen, said. Romney, the former leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah who went on to run twice for the White House, is one of the state's most popular politicians.

Two years ago, Love, who is running against Democrat Doug Owens, had a number of high-profile Republicans campaigning for her in Utah including Arizona Sen. John McCain and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

This time, she has limited the big names.

Last November, former Congressman and retired Army Lt. Col. Allen West held a fundraiser and town hall for Love. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla. planned last month to host a veterans roundtable with her, but cancelled after his flight was delayed.
