COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Most social fraternities at the University of South Carolina have been suspended from recruiting activities.

The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1EveIq7) a letter from the vice president of conduct for the USC Interfraternity Council said 13 of the 19 fraternities have been suspended.

USC's Jonathan Withrow says the suspensions are the result of recent violations. His letter said the violations involved alcohol and risk management policies.

The letter says the fraternities disregarded warnings at an emergency meeting with Fraternity and Sorority Life Associate Director Jarod Holt on Aug. 27.

The letter says the fraternities held unsanctioned events with alcohol. Informal rush events are supposed to be alcohol-free.

The fraternities must meet individually with the Interfraternity Council to discuss the allegations in order to get approval to resume recruiting activities.
