PALMERTON, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say speed was a factor in a fiery head-on crash in eastern Pennsylvania that claimed the lives of four teens and left one car upside-down and another split in two.

State troopers in Carbon County said Saturday afternoon that the four were in a sedan heading west on Dairy Road in Lower Towamensing Township that collided with an eastbound car shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Police said both vehicles overturned and caught fire, while the car carrying the teens smashed into a tree and was ripped in half.

Police said the driver — listed by police as 17 but said by the coroner's office to be 19 — was killed along with two 16-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl. An 18-year-old female and a 22-year-old man were hospitalized.
