(AP) - A LITTLE TIGHTER: Airlines are squeezing more seats onto planes. Many commonly-used planes on U.S. routes are getting an extra row. Many of Boeing's 777s, which are used for international flights, are now getting 10 seats across instead of nine.
WILL YOU NOTICE? Many of the seats on U.S. flights are a little closer together. Airlines say passengers won't notice because the seats themselves aren't as thick, and because of design changes meant to make you feel like you have just as much space. Some passengers notice, some don't.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR AIRLINES? For airlines, less weight equals less fuel burn. United figures it will cut 1,200 pounds from each Airbus A320 by installing new seats.
