MADRID (AP) — Spain's second-largest newspaper, El Mundo, has not appeared in news kiosks owing to a strike over planned layoffs. It is the first time the newspaper's publication has been hit by a stoppage since its foundation in 1989.
The newspaper, which has daily sales of some 120,000, was not in media outlets Wednesday due to the 24-hour strike begun Tuesday over proposals to lay off 224 employees at the Unidad Editorial parent group. The paper continued to publish online.
The Madrid Press Association said the layoffs included 91 at El Mundo.
The group also publishes sports tabloid Marca — Spain's largest-circulation daily publication — and financial daily Expansion but both these papers were on sale at kiosks and available online.
