WEST JORDAN — The artwork of a 91-year-old World War II veteran will be auctioned at a charity event Saturday to help raise money for free educational classes.

Thomas Carter said he grew up in Idaho and after traveling for many years as a meteorologist, he settled in Salt Lake City in 1958. He said he has been painting on and off for 20 years and has done around 40 paintings.

“I was always kind of interested in (painting), but I never really did anything,” he said. “I did some pastels back when I was younger, but never (anything) serious.”

Carter said he served in World War II in the Army Engineers from 1942 to 1945 and had to put his painting on hold. He said now he paints every Monday for two hours at a class. When asked to donate a painting for the charity auction, he said he didn’t hesitate.

“I just had them so I figured, ‘Might as well,’ ” he said.

We are just extremely grateful for the (donated artwork) and we hope the public will come out and appreciate the quality of the art and bid on them and participate in this wonderful coming together of generations.

–Ashley Burt

Conservation Garden Park development and communications director Ashlee Burt said the painting will be auctioned with 50 original pieces of artwork donated by citizens of local senior centers. The silent auction is part of the Party in the Park event held to raise money for the Conservation Garden Park public outreach and free conservation education classes. “We are just extremely grateful for the (donated artwork) and we hope the public will come out and appreciate the quality of the art and bid on them,” Burt said. “And participate in this wonderful coming together of generations.”

The Party in the Park also will offer a butterfly release, live bands, kids crafts, food vendors and educational exhibits from Hogle Zoo and Wild Wonder. The event will be held at the Conservation Garden Park at 8275 S. 1300 West from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Faith Heaton Jolley is a UVU graduate and currently works at KSL as Head Writer for ksl.com and runs the Outdoors & Recreation section.
