UTAH COUNTY — Utah County Health Department officials announced Monday that West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Utah County.

Utah County Health Department public information officer Lance Madigan said the virus was detected in two groups of Culex pipien mosquitoes. He said one group was near Springville and the other group was west of Orem.

Madigan said residents in the other areas of the county should also be wary and be sure to wear mosquito repellents with DEET.

“Mosquitoes can fly a great distance, even up to 10 miles," Madigan said in a news release. "We also have heard (of) positive tests from all over the state."

Madigan said people can help eliminate mosquito bites by avoiding doing outdoor activities from dusk until dawn when mosquitoes are the most active. He also advised individuals to eliminate standing water in their yards that can serve as mosquito breeding sites and to change the water in birdbaths weekly.
