OREM — One of the children injured in a weekend cannon accident has been released from the hospital.
On Saturday, two boys and a girl, all about 10 years old, were injured when a Civil War re-enactment group at Orem Summerfest’s Grand Parade fired a cannon on 800 East, just south of Center Street.
"For whatever reason, whether it was the fuse or a spark, went into the pouch that one of the 10-year-olds was holding and there was a secondary explosion. How would anybody expect that to happen?" Orem Police Lt. Guy Gustman said.
The children — two of them a brother and sister — were taken to the Burn Center at University Hospital in Salt Lake City. One of the children has since been sent home. The conditions of the two who remained at the hospital Tuesday were not immediately released. Gustman did not know if one of the boys or the girl had been allowed to go home.
He called the event a "very unfortunately accident" and said it was too early to say how the incident might affect next year's parade.
