SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was killed in a TRAX accident Monday evening.
Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, a TRAX northbound train pulling out of the 1300 South Ballpark Station hit a female pedestrian, Utah Transit Authority officials confirmed. Salt Lake City police said the woman was killed on scene.
Witnesses said they heard a loud "thud" but didn't see the accident.
The woman was intoxicated, police said. Around 4 p.m., she had been taken into custody for public intoxication, Utah Transit Police Lt. Alex Blauer said. She was released to a detox facility. Police did not have any details about the half hour between that drop off and the crash. An officer who had responded to the public intoxication call identified the woman on the scene of the crash.
A bus bridge was set up for an hour between the Courthouse, 450 South, and Central Pointe, 2100 South stations while police investigated. The accident caused significant delays for TRAX travelers throughout downtown Salt Lake City.
As of 7:05 p.m., the TRAX lines had continued their regular schedules.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Her name had not been released, pending notification of the family.
