DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Veteran television newscaster Larry Stogner is announcing his retirement after nearly 40 years, telling his viewers he has been diagnosed with ALS.

Stogner made the announcement on Friday's 6 p.m. newscast for WTVD in Durham, where he has been an anchor since 1982. He told viewers that he is stepping down immediately to fight the disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease and spend time with his wife and family.

WTVD said on its website that Stogner informed the station of his plans during a staff meeting prior to the newscast.

In 2010, Stogner was inducted into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame, joining such journalists as David Brinkley, Charles Kuralt and Charlie Rose.

Stogner will appear for his final newscast on Feb. 6.
