OVERLOOK HOTEL — It is not unfair to say IKEA has been compared to your worst nightmares, especially if you make your visit on a Saturday afternoon.

The horrors derive from the crush of humanity; the heaps grumpy, crying kids, and the feeling that you’ll never emerge from twisting and turning pathways of the 300,000 square feet of the average store. (That’s five football fields, kids.)

IKEA Singapore pokes fun of that feeling of horror in its new commercial, a practically perfect homage to the horror film “The Shining.”

The scene that IKEA recreates is a re-enactment of Danny, the son of the caretaker played by Jack Nicholson in the movie, pedaling his tricycle endlessly through the halls of Timberline Lodge. At the end of Danny’s journey, he encounters a set of creepy twins (who the audience knows must be ghosts) who eerily ask Danny to “Come play with us.” It’s arguably one of the best steadishots in film.

The parody includes another little boy endlessly pedaling through twists and turns, but this time it’s on an IKEA showroom floor and with a few spooky-fun additions. He passes mock living spaces with flashing lights, a skeleton family around a kitchen table and inexplicable mists creeping from the ceiling.

His journey also comes to a halt on sight of a set of creepy “twins,” but it turns out it’s just his parents asking him to “Come pay with us.”

The homage is so spot-on spooky yet hilarious that it almost makes you mad no one has thought of it before.
